What are transient overvoltages?

Transient overvoltages are brief increases in voltage, measured between two conductors or between a conductor and ground. These increases can be caused by atmospheric electrical discharges (lightning) or by switching processes or faults, such as ground contact or short circuits.

These overvoltages can cause premature aging of components and damage equipment connected to the electrical grid.

How can we protect ourselves?

To protect installations against these transient overvoltages, there are protection devices such as gas discharge tubes, zinc oxide varistors, suppressor diodes, spark gaps, among others.

These devices are divided into three types according to the level of protection they offer:

  • TYPE 1 Protector: Protects against direct lightning strikes and is installed in places where the lightning currents and electromagnetic effects are not attenuated.
  • TYPE 2 Protector: Limits transient overvoltages and diverts currents to ground to protect the installation and electrical equipment. It is installed in places where the lightning currents and electromagnetic effects are attenuated.
  • TYPE 3 Protector: Protects against more attenuated industrial overvoltages and is installed near sensitive equipment or more than 30 meters from the previous protector.
