A total of 776,126 lightning strikes hit the peninsula and the Balearic Islands this past August. This is the highest figure since the year 2000.
It has been an extraordinarily stormy month on the peninsula, with thunderstorms on all but one day. This has occurred, among other reasons, due to troughs of cold air over the peninsula and humidity from the Mediterranean. These storms have caused numerous forest fires in our country, seriously endangering living beings and property.
As for September, it is worth noting that atmospheric activity begins to be more active and it is common for storms to produce more lightning. Therefore, experts describe the intense storms affecting the entire peninsula over the last week as "normal".
