Skyscrapers are buildings at least 100 or 150 meters tall. This makes them more exposed to lightning strikes, as during a storm, lightning hits points that stand out from the rest. But what happens if lightning strikes a skyscraper?
Most commonly, just as when lightning strikes an airplane, absolutely nothing happens. The skyscraper acts as a Faraday cage: a metal enclosure that conducts electricity along its exterior, protecting the people and everything inside the building.
These huge buildings have a large antenna at the very top that attracts lightning without suffering any damage.
In this way, they are protected and pose no danger to people, but they do allow photographers and enthusiasts to immortalize this impressive phenomenon around the world.
